Shellfish Harvesting
Autumn and winter best for harvesting shellfish, prawns and Dungeness crab on the Sunsine Coast. Oysters and clams are abundant and accessible at low tides. Combine a hike into a secluded bay with a couple of trusty tools, some condiments to season a few samples, and some means to get your catch home, and you have the elements of a great Sunshine Coast day.

Fishing
Close to Vancouver, the multitude of quiet lakes and 80 km of sparsely populated coastline equals great sport fishing on the lower Sunshine Coast. Mooch for salmon, angle for cutthroat trout and various species of cod. Prawning and crabbing are also good year round in the protected waters of Georgia Strait.

Aptly named Trout Lake, a pretty 14 hectare lake on the north side of Hwy 101 in Halfmoon Bay, is stocked with Cutthroat Trout. It’s a popular spot for local anglers with best results Apr-Jul and Sep-Oct.

Sunshine Coast Marinas

Check these local marinas and operators for boat rentals, chartered fishing or ocean sightseeing excursions. If you are visiting in your own boat, you can buy your fishing/shellfish harvesting license online. All marinas will have information on charts, licenses, restrictions and limits .

Buccaneer Marina

Buccaneer Marina is a fifteen minute drive from The Pointhouse, offering rental boats and rental fishing gear. Their rental boats are 17′ Hourston Glasscrafts complete with 60 horsepower Mercury Outboards. These boats will comfortably seat up to six adults.

All boats are supplied with the required safety equipment:i.e. life jackets, heaving line, paddle, fire extinguisher, whistle, flashlight and anchor.
Rates $45/hr. Fishing rods are available for rent at $5.00 per rod. All persons renting a boat must have a valid drivers licence and must be 19 years or older. A damage deposit will also be required. Reservations are suggested for weekends.

In Madeira Park, 30 minutes from The Pointhouse, the Marina at Sunshine Coast Resort offers a selection of open aluminum boats or fiberglass runabout’s ranging in length from 12 to 17 feet with engines ranging from 20 horsepower to 75 horsepower.These boats will comfortably seat up to six adults and come with required safety gear. Rates from $30-75/hr.

You can also rent fishing or crabbing gear. Most boats feature fish finders and rod holders. Portable live bait tanks, landing nets and a fish cleaning station are provided.
