The recent windstorm and 59-hour power outage, combined with a fallen tree on our Aerie guesthouse, offered a unique opportunity to reflect on the thoughtful design of the Pointhouse Suites, the challenges we encountered, and the lessons we’ve learned for the future.

The Pointhouse was designed with resilience and sustainability in mind, and these features proved their worth during the storm. Passive solar design elements, such as large windows for natural light and superior insulation, ensured the house remained bright and comfortable, even without power. Backup systems, including a generator to maintain critical systems like refrigeration and water, and alternative heating options such as gas and wood-burning fireplaces, provided essential comforts and helped us care for our guests.

Despite these strengths, the outage revealed areas for growth. Communication was a significant challenge, as disrupted cell service and internet made it difficult to access real-time updates about weather conditions and power restoration. Additionally, while our generator maintained key systems, we’re exploring the possibility of expanding its capacity to provide even greater convenience.

This experience also highlighted the importance of preparation and community. We were fortunate to have a well-stocked supply of emergency essentials like candles, lanterns, and cozy throws. However, the storm reinforced the need to continually evaluate and enhance these supplies. The support of neighbors and the resilience of local services in clearing roads and restoring power reminded us of the value of community connections during challenging times.

Looking ahead, we’re committed to refining our approach to power outages. This includes improving communication options, such as satellite tools or emergency radios, to keep guests informed, and updating our guest information to help them make the most of stormy weather. Above all, the experience affirmed the importance of designing spaces that balance comfort, sustainability, and the ability to weather life’s surprises.

The storm was a powerful reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of the natural world. At the Pointhouse, we’re grateful for the chance to embrace these moments, learn from them, and share the experience with our guests in a way that’s both safe and memorable.
